US to Stockpile Key Drug Ingredients to Strengthen Supply

President Trump has issued an order to boost the US supply of essential medicines. The plan focuses on stockpiling key ingredients for about 26 critical drugs, ensuring the country has enough to last six months. These ingredients will be stored in a special reserve called the Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Reserve (SAPIR). The goal is to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, especially from countries that might not always be reliable partners. The government hopes this will also encourage more US-based production of these ingredients. The list of critical drugs will be updated within 30 days, with a focus on buying from US manufacturers whenever possible. This move follows other recent efforts, like the FDA’s PreCheck program, which helps companies build new drug-making facilities in the US. Currently, only 11% of these key ingredients are made in the US, but that number is expected to grow as more companies invest in domestic production.
